چکیده

[1] To analyze and interpret the chemical record, the 2007 Phoenix Mars Lander includes four wet chemistry cells. These Wet Chemistry Laboratories (WCLs), part of the Microscopy, Electrochemistry, and Conductivity Analyzer (MECA) package, each consist of a lower ‘‘beaker’’ containing sensors designed to analyze the chemical properties of the regolith and an upper ‘‘actuator assembly’’ for adding soil, water, reagents, and stirring. The beaker contains an array of sensors and electrodes that include six membranebased ion selective electrodes (ISE) to measure Ca, Mg, K, Na, NO3 /ClO4 , and NH4 ; two ISEs for H (pH); a Ba ISE for titrimetric determination of SO4 2 ; two Li ISEs as reference electrodes; three solid crystal pellet ISEs for Cl , Br , and I ; an iridium oxide electrode for pH; a carbon ring electrode for conductivity; a Pt electrode for oxidation reduction potential (Eh); a Pt and two Ag electrodes for determination of Cl , Br , and I using chronopotentiometry (CP); a Au electrode for identifying redox couples using cyclic voltammetry (CV); and a Au microelectrode array that could be used for either CVor to indicate the presence of several heavy metals, including Cu, Cd, Pb, Fe, and Hg using anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). The WCL sensors and analytical procedures have been calibrated and characterized using standard solutions, geological Earth samples, Mars simulants, and cuttings from a Martian meteorite. Sensor characteristics such as limits of detection, interferences, and implications of the Martian environment are also being studied. A sensor response library is being developed to aid in the interpretation of the data.

POLAR MARS BIOHABITABILITY ASSESSMENT OF THE WET CHEMISTRY ANALYSIS ON THE 2007 PHOENIX MARS SCOUT MISSION. S.M.M.Young,

Introduction: The 2007 Phoenix Mars Scout lander launched on 4 August 2007 and landed on 25 May 2009 at the northern polar latitude of 68.22°N, and longitude 234.25°E (areocentric) [1]. The landing site was a field of sand wedge polygonal terrain [2,3]. For 152 sols the mission made extensive atmospheric and ground measurements. Analyses included interacting with and excavating the Mars regolit...

Thermal and Evolved Gas Analysis of Geologic Samples Containing Organic Materials: Implications for the 2007 Mars Phoenix Scout Mission

Introduction: The Thermal “and” Evolved Gas Analyzer (TEGA) instrument scheduled to fly onboard the 2007 Mars Phoenix Scout Mission will perform differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and evolved gas analysis (EGA) of soil samples and ice collected from the surface and subsurface at a northern landing site on Mars. We have been developing a sample characterization data library using a laborato...

Multi-scale Variability in the Ice-table Depth at Potential Phoenix Landing

Introduction: A major objective of the Mars Scout mission, Phoenix, is to characterize the present state of water in the martian environment, at a location where water may play a significant role in the present and past habitability of Mars [1]. Given the generally dry and cold climate of Mars today, any substantial amount of water is expected to occur in the form of ground ice within the regol...

Temperature, pressure, and wind instrumentation in the Phoenix meteorological package

[1] The meteorological package (MET) on the Phoenix Lander is designed to provide information on the daily and seasonal variations in Mars near-polar weather during Martian late spring and summer. The present paper provides some background on the temperature, pressure, and wind instrumentation on the Phoenix MET station and their characterization. A separate paper addresses the MET lidar instru...

Search for ultraviolet luminescence of soil particles at the Phoenix landing site, Mars

The Optical Microscope (OM) on the Phoenix Mars lander (operated from May through October 2008) was used to search for visible-wavelength luminescence of soil particles excited by ultraviolet (UV) illumination (l1⁄4360–390 nm). No luminescent particles were found, with the possible exception of a few potentially luminescent features comprising about 0.02% of the total soil volume. The luminesce...
